Operating System (OS) computer science ka sabse core subject hai. Agar aap exams ya interview ki taiyari kar rahe hain, toh ye Operating System handwritten notes aapko har concept crystal clear kar denge. In notes ko BCA, B.Tech (CS/IT), aur GATE aspirants ke liye specially design kiya gaya hai.

What is OS?

Operating System: The Interface

Ek Operating System wo software hai jo hardware aur user ke beech ek bridge ka kaam karta hai. Bina OS ke, aap apne computer hardware (CPU, RAM) se kaam nahi le sakte. Examples: Windows 11, Ubuntu (Linux), macOS, aur Android.

Main Functions of Operating System

File Management
Memory Management
Process Management
Security & Protection
Device Management

Kernel vs User Mode

Operating system do modes mein operate karta hai: User Mode mein applications run hoti hain, jabki Kernel Mode mein system-level tasks (privileged instructions) execute hote hain. Ye system stability ke liye bahut zaroori hai.

CPU Scheduling Algorithms

CPU utilization badhane ke liye OS in algorithms ka use karta hai:

  • FCFS: First Come First Serve (Simple but Convoy Effect).
  • SJN: Shortest Job Next (Minimum average waiting time).
  • Round Robin: Time-sharing systems ke liye best.
  • Priority Scheduling: Important tasks ko pehle execute karna.
Interview Special

Deadlock & Banker's Algorithm

Interview mein Deadlock ki 4 conditions (Mutual Exclusion, Hold & Wait, No Preemption, Circular Wait) aksar puchi jati hain. Banker's Algorithm ka use Deadlock Avoidance ke liye kiya jata hai taaki system hamesha "Safe State" mein rahe.

Memory Management & Virtual Memory

Modern OS Virtual Memory ka use karta hai taaki hum RAM se bada program run kar saken. Isme Paging aur Segmentation ka major role hota hai.

Feature Paging Segmentation
Size Fixed Size Pages Variable Size Segments
Fragmentation Internal Fragmentation External Fragmentation
Warning - Thrashing: Jab system page fault handle karne mein itna busy ho jaye ki CPU execution ruk jaye, toh use Thrashing kehte hain. Isse performance zero ho jati hai.

???? Preparation Tips for OS Exam:
  1. Process State Diagram ko dil se yaad karlein.
  2. Scheduling Numericals ke liye Gantt Chart ki practice karein.
  3. Page Replacement Algorithms (FIFO, LRU) solve karna seekhein.
  4. System Calls (fork, exec, wait) ke function samjhein.
