1. Reflection of Light

Reflection is the phenomenon of bouncing back of light rays when they strike a polished surface (like a mirror).

Laws of Reflection

[Image of the laws of reflection of light]

  • The angle of incidence is always equal to the angle of reflection (∠i = ∠r).
  • The incident ray, the reflected ray, and the normal at the point of incidence all lie in the same plane.

Spherical Mirrors

Concave Mirror: Curving inwards. Acts as a converging mirror.
Convex Mirror: Curving outwards. Acts as a diverging mirror.
Key Terms:
  • Center of Curvature (C): The center of the hollow sphere of which the mirror is a part.
  • Principal Focus (F): The point where parallel rays meet (or appear to meet) after reflection.
  • Relationship: R = 2f (Radius of curvature is twice the focal length).

2. Mirror Formula & Magnification

These formulas are essential for solving numerical problems in the Class 10 boards.

Mirror Formula1/v + 1/u = 1/f

(v = image distance, u = object distance, f = focal length)

Magnification (m)m = h'/h = -v/u
m is Negative: Image is Real and Inverted.
m is Positive: Image is Virtual and Erect.

3. Refraction of Light

The bending of light when it passes from one transparent medium to another due to a change in its speed.

Laws of Refraction (Snell’s Law)

  • The incident ray, the refracted ray, and the normal all lie in the same plane.
  • The ratio of the sine of the angle of incidence to the sine of the angle of refraction is constant:
Snell's Lawsin i / sin r = constant (n)

Refractive Index (n)

Represents how much light slows down in a medium.

n₂₁ = Speed of light in medium 1 / Speed of light in medium 2

4. Lenses

Lenses work on the principle of refraction.

[Image of ray diagrams for convex and concave lenses]

Convex Lens: Thick at center, thin at edges. (Converging)
Concave Lens: Thin at center, thick at edges. (Diverging)
Lens Formula1/v - 1/u = 1/f
Power of a Lens (P)P = 1 / f (in meters)
  • Unit: Dioptre (D).
  • Convex lens power: Positive (+)
  • Concave lens power: Negative (-)
QUICK REVISION
  • Sign Convention: Object distance (u) is always negative.
  • Nature: Real images = Inverted | Virtual images = Erect.
  • High Weightage: Practice all 6 cases of image formation for concave mirrors and convex lenses!
