This handwritten guide is ideal for engineers, students, and electronics enthusiasts. It covers SPI basics, communication protocols, timing diagrams, modes, applications, and common interview questions. Whether preparing for interviews or learning embedded systems, this PDF provides clear, concise, and well-structured notes.
What is SPI Protocol?
SPI (Serial Peripheral Interface) is a synchronous serial communication protocol. It is used for short-distance communication between microcontrollers and peripherals. SPI commonly connects devices like sensors, displays, and memory modules. The protocol uses four signals:
MOSI (Master Out Slave In): Sends data from master to slave
MISO (Master In Slave Out): Sends data from slave to master
SCLK (Serial Clock): Synchronizes data transmission
CS/SS (Chip Select/Slave Select): Chooses the active slave device
SPI Protocol Basics
SPI is a full-duplex protocol using a master-slave architecture. Data is transferred per clock cycle. Compared to I²C, SPI is faster and simpler to implement.
SPI Modes and Timing
SPI operates in four modes, defined by clock polarity (CPOL) and clock phase (CPHA). Each mode ensures correct data transfer.
Mode 0: CPOL = 0, CPHA = 0
Mode 1: CPOL = 0, CPHA = 1
Mode 2: CPOL = 1, CPHA = 0
Mode 3: CPOL = 1, CPHA = 1
Timing diagrams in the PDF show data setup, hold times, and clock edges.
Applications of SPI Protocol
SPI is widely used in electronics projects. Common applications include:
Interfacing with EEPROM, Flash memory, and SD cards
Reading sensor data (temperature, pressure, motion)
Driving displays like LCDs and OLEDs
Real-time data transfer between microcontrollers
SPI Interview Questions Covered
